Peer review

I had a peer review session and I found out what the other people thought of my work and these are some of the opinions I got.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for the magazine will be for the music fans in particular the hip hop fans.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From using the process of constructing my media products I have learnt how to use “Photoshop”  to manipulate and edit images and ”Illustrator” . I have learnt how to use these two products effectively and it will be a skill I can keep and use later on in life.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

WWMD distribution company. I think that there are the most likely to be able to distribute my mediaproduct because they distribute similar products at affordable prices and as my product is new I need to keep the budget low so WWMD are best suited.

How does your media products represent particular social groups?

The use of colour and iconography within the image help the audience realise that this is a hip hop magazine. The hoody and dull colours . Its unlikely that anyone would mistaken it for a classical magazine

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

DPS - Drafts

This page is not clearly aligned, and the text looks very busy.
In comparison to my contents page, my second draft looks very weak. The colours, and the dead spaces. There is not clear structure to the work.

Contents page idea

The colours on the page contrast the image  making everything stand, this is enabled by the glow effect I have on the image.

All the colours I have used I have carefully picked them of the page, to do this I used the colour picker on Adobe Photoshop. This allowed me not to use too many tones of the same colour making my work look consistent and colour co-ordinate.
My final draft looks good and it conforms with most generic codes and conventions of magazines. Mention what………. (barcode, date price, large mast head. And one large image.  etc..)

Construction of Front page. Image editing

Looking at existing professionally produced RWD magazine with the large image of Skepta. I like the way that they have use a red glow to reflect the light on the page. I have use the same idea for my front image although I have not used the glow on just a small section of the page I have decided to used it every where on the page as this highlight the clothing and make the clothing stand out from the background.
I have also used some generic mise en sene for the image composition as the model has the neck chain and the hoody, this is a generic element of the Hip Hop culture. The model has a straight face, this straight face with no emotion makes the mood serious and this is another convention Hip Hop magazines. The model eyes are looking directly in the readers eyes this will help with the reception theory. This is also another generic element of magazines as they are made to attract the reader/buyer.

Front cover development

Although the first draft looked good it denotes the codes and conventions of magazines because I can not see the characters/models faces properly.
The second draft, the left hand side of it looks too empty, and because the way magazines are aligned on shelves in shops I had to do something about it.

Editing images

From peer review and analysis, the picture looked too plain and the model had a lot of on his face, so I edited the image and I put an orange tint/glow.

Front cover images

From all the images I photographed I choose this image because the eyes engage with the reader. The clothing and accessorises, are generic  representations of the genre hip hop.
I have chosen this image for the front page as I believe that this is a good image because the eyes of the feature artist are looking straight and they can connect with the reader/customer as every angle you look at the image it looks like the artist is looking at you. This helps with the reception theory as this image can be received in many different ways. Gaze theory also applies as the reader will want to look like the feature artist, as the artist is a public figure.

Research into existing hip hop magazines double page spread (DPS).

Contents page

The two ideas I have for the contents page both ideas are different but they will show different creative styles in my work.

And again this is not what my work will end up looking like as this is only guide lines to what I want it to look like.

Front page development.

These are some of the design ideas I have came up with. there are all different, but they follow the same conventions for example they all have the name of the magazine on the top and the logo also on the top, a large image to support the featured artist. As these are only design ideas, I am aware that my ideas might change because of a number of different reasons.

Introduction to the development section.

After doing my research, and as I move into to the development stage of my work I am going to use all the knowledge and conventions into my work. I am going show you some of the development work I have carried out and highlight the reasons why I have chosen my design techniques.

Research into existing hip hop magazines double page spread (DPS).

In my research,  I have found that the DPS text or image crosses centrefold, to give that feeling that both pages are actually one, (as in a continuation of the same thing).  For my DPS the text or image will go across centrefold, as I have seen that this technique works extremely well.

I have also found that both pages have the same colour scheme this makes it easier to link both pages.

Further research into contents page.

Research into existing hip hop magazines.

Looking at existing contents pages that are produced for the Hip Hop genre you can see that all of them are pretty simple and they have a simple background. There is not a lot of text on the page, this is not very conventional as magazines usually have a lot of texts and pages on each page. I find that not having a lot of information on the contents page. A theory that Hip Hop magazines do use is gaze theory, this is clearly demonstrated in the large pull out of the 'Rolling Stone' magazine in the middle. I say this because the male audience will like this magazine because of the attractive female in the middle and the female audience will like it because they would might wish they had that body and legs. I have found some basic code and conventions are:
  • The feature artist or story is the main character on the front page.
  • The background colour is similar to the featured story.
  • There is one main images (like the front page)
This Contents pages subverts the codes and conventions of music magazines although it looks good, it is still missing some conventions such as:
  • Image of the front cover of the magazine.
  • In columns, usually 3 or 4. (Features and regulars - main category headings)
  • Other smaller images.
  • Name of the magazine is at the top, issue date and the word contents
How ever it does follow some conventions such as having the issue number, and crediting the photographer for the front page image.

Research into existing hip hop magazines.

My AS foundation portfolio requires me to create a front page, contents page and double page spread for a music genre of your choice.

I have decided to create a magazine for the Hip Hop Magazine. I have chosen this because Hip Hop is my music choice and I have background knowledge of the music stars within the genre. from the image on the opposite side I have you can see some of the existing professionally made magazines.

From looking at existing magazines within the Hip Hop genre, I have found that all of them follow these basic codes and conventions and these are

  • The main image is the feature article.
  • The cover line story is the largest on the page.
  • There is a bar code and date (unless its not forsale ( the RWD magazine with Skepta on the page))
  • There is small amount of colours used.
  • Large masthead the colour of the title contrasts with the background making it easily legible.
  • All the magazines keep a similar furniture and structure from copy to copy.
  • The background is pretty dull and very simple.

Final Front cover

this is the draft of the contents page I have drawn out.

Sketches of the front page.

Before I started producing my work on illustrator I did some hand drawn sketches this was to give me an idea of the design I wanted, and to know when I wanted the text and images to be as you can see I have put the name of the school at the top of the page as I found that most of the existing products have their names at the top

Research into existing School magazines front covers

To complete this task I have looked at existing professional made school magazines, I have annotated the image in the JPeg above. I also found that the images used also attract the audience because of Gaze theory for example the 'insight magazine the girl on the cover looks well dressed and has fair skin this might attract people because of the way she looks.

AS Preliminary Brief

To create a front page and Contents page of a school magazine.
